He had been laid off from Coinbase after just four months of working there. The company was going through firm-wide layoffs, and senior engineering managers were being hit particularly hard as the organization flattened.
When we first spoke, he had already started reaching out to people in his network. A few conversations were moving, but he hadn't actually interviewed anywhere yet.
More time applying than preparing
What was bothering him most was how much time the search itself was taking.
“I’m spending a lot of time applying and all this type of stuff, which would be better spent preparing.”
He needed interviews, but what he didn't want was to spend hours every day finding jobs, filling out applications, following up with recruiters and trying to figure out which companies were worth pursuing.
There was another issue; his network could generate referrals, but there were only so many companies he could reach through people he already knew. He wanted to expand the search and understand where his background gave him the most leverage.
Expanding beyond his network
So, when we took over the search, we worked on his positioning, rebuilt his resume and expanded the companies he was getting in front of.
The response was much stronger than he expected. At one point, the recruiter interest was so high that he told us, “Maybe we need to get more selective.”
13 interviews and two offers in 47 days
Within 47 days, he had 13 interviews across companies including Adobe, Stripe, Netflix, Roblox, Amazon and Capital One.
He eventually had multiple serious offers on the table, including a Principal AI Engineering role worth $855K in total comp and another Engineering Manager opportunity worth $650K+.
He ended up choosing the Principal role because he wanted to spend the next couple of years going deep into AI at an individual level.
Seven weeks earlier, he had been laid off and had not even started interviewing. Now, he was choosing between offers at some of the biggest names in technology.
That is what a properly managed job search can do. It gives a senior leader the time to focus on preparation, interviews and evaluating the right opportunities while someone else handles the machinery of the search.
