A Director of Engineering had been applying “left, right and center” for five months.
Not one interview.
This was a client who had spent years leading large technology organizations. He had recently been let go from Walmart during a reorganization, and when he started looking for his next role, the market was giving him almost nothing back.
He had even made it through the entire interview loop at Meta before getting stuck on a coding question.
Every resume looks the same
He told us something I think a lot of experienced engineering leaders are feeling right now: “Every resume looks the same, more or less.”
He had a point. With AI making it easier to produce polished resumes and generic applications, sending another application into a pile of hundreds wasn't creating much movement.
There were other constraints too. He had turned down an opportunity in Atlanta because of the return-to-office requirement and needed to stay around Southern California for the time being.
By the time we spoke, he was even open to taking a Manager role if that's what it took to get back into the market. His thinking was simple: get back in, create impact, and climb again.
More chances to have his experience evaluated
What he really needed was more opportunities to have his actual experience evaluated.
So we focused heavily on the part of the search that is almost impossible for one person to do at scale: identifying the right companies and people, getting the messaging right, and creating conversations beyond the standard application queue.
He later told us:
“That's the part which an individual will miss. How would an individual go to so many people?”
45+ interviews and two Director offers
Over the engagement, he went through 45+ interviews with companies including DocuSign, Logitech, Amazon, GEICO, Uber, Zendesk, Crunchyroll, CrowdStrike and Roblox.
Eventually, he had two Director of Software Engineering offers on the table.
He accepted one with a global ticketing platform at a $280K+ base.
After being in the market for months without a single interview, he was suddenly choosing between multiple Director-level opportunities.
In one of our recent calls, he said:
“WF has helped me a lot actually to shape career.”
That's what made this search interesting. The goal wasn't simply to get his resume into more inboxes. It was to help a very experienced engineering leader adapt to a hiring market that had changed significantly since he last had to interview at this level.
Eight months later, he had a new Director role, a strong compensation package, and a clear path toward VP.
You don't need another 200 applications. You need more chances for the right people to actually see what you're capable of.
We do exactly that for you.
