Chris is an accomplished engineering leader from retail tech and adtech, including hyper-growth environments. He searched through the aftermath of the 2022 and 2023 tech layoffs, which was the worst market for engineering leadership in a decade, and it took about a year.
We tracked 341 applications and 34 interview processes, a conversion rate of roughly 10%, across around 180 individual interview conversations.
Both figures are worth stating because they measure different things. Thirty-four is the number of distinct roles that reached interview. One hundred and eighty is the number of actual conversations those produced, because a single process runs through a recruiter screen, a hiring manager, a panel and often a final round. That is the same grain distinction our public interviews list uses: one row is one posting, not one round.
This one is here because it was hard
A year is not the number anyone wants in a case study, and it is the reason this belongs on the site. A search like this is a test of persistence as much as positioning, and pretending otherwise would misrepresent what a bad market does to good candidates.
“Even with the interviews being landed, the conversations happening and falling apart.”
Interviews landing and then dying at late stages, repeatedly, over months, is the actual texture of a downturn search. Nothing about his qualifications explained it, and it is why the conversation count runs so far ahead of the offer count.
What the conversion rate is worth knowing
At roughly 10%, he was converting at around three times the wider market's rate of about 3 interviews per 100 applications, and it still took a year. Both facts are true at once, and holding them together is the honest read: better conversion shortens a hard search, it does not make it easy.
The value of a service that does not stop
The engagement ran for as long as the search did. That is the whole point of a placement guarantee in a market like that one: the cost of a long search sits with us rather than arriving as a renewal invoice at the point the candidate is most worn down.
