Apple's 10% share drop and why it matters to your job

Apple lost $500Bn, and you might be laid off because of it.

It’s become SOP for Fortune 500 companies to reduce their workforce as an offset for increasing costs or dipping profits. Layoffs.fyi reported 122K+ layoffs across the top 278 companies they were tracking in the year of 2025. As of August 3, 2026, this year’s number has already reached 124K+.

What happened to Apple

Apple shares fell almost 10% on Friday after news broke about soaring component costs and signs of supply shortages.

While addressing the April to June quarter earnings call, Tim Cook said:

“The root cause of it is not a regular supply issue. It's a demand forecast issue, to be candid, where the iPhone and the Mac are both doing remarkably better than we thought they would do.”

Talk suffering from success.

Why it reaches you

Now you might be thinking, I’m not a shareholder, why am I even reading this? Because if you’re not affected by ripples in the tech market, you’re not in the tech market to begin with.

Every company under the sun is keeping a keen eye on the AI (and more specifically Data Center) race. If the component cost is expensive for OEM’s, it’s going to affect your firm as well, however further down the supply chain you may be. And whatever affects your company’s financials affects you (and your financials).

Now, a natural question to ask yourself would be, “My company is prepared to part ways with me at a moment’s notice. Am I?”

If your answer is no, now might be the right time to check if you’re even employable outside your current firm; and even if you are, how are you going to organize a steady stream of interviews so that you don’t spend months looking for a new role when you need to?

Interviews don’t magically appear out of thin air, unless you’re a Wolf Mentoring client.
