Does hitting your targets make you layoff-proof? The Dropbox case

Do you think consistently hitting your targets makes you layoff-proof?

What Dropbox announced

Dropbox is cutting 9% of its workforce, affecting teams across engineering, product, design and administration.

The reason? They want to “align its teams and investments with its biggest product and growth priorities”.

Corporate translation: fewer people, same ambitious roadmap.

Dropbox expects the layoffs themselves to cost $27 million to $33 million in severance, benefits and related expenses. Most of that cash is expected to go out in the fourth quarter.

Dropbox also told investors that its third-quarter revenue and adjusted operating margin should come in at or above previous guidance. Those are preliminary numbers, but this doesn't look like a company announcing an emergency rescue operation.

And the leadership changes haven't exactly been subtle. Co-founder Drew Houston stepped down as CEO in May, with Ashraf Alkarmi taking over. Five months later, the CTO is heading out too.

What it means if you're weighing a leadership role

For senior engineering and product leaders, there's a lesson here that keeps repeating across Big Tech: hitting financial targets doesn't guarantee your organization, your budget or even your executive sponsor will survive the next “restructuring”.

If you're evaluating a new leadership role, ask what the company is actually prioritizing, which teams have budget, and how often the org chart has changed. A shiny VP title is less exciting when your entire division gets reorganized six months later.

A backup plan for your backup plan

The only way to sleep easier in such times is to have a backup plan ready for your backup plan. And there is no better backup plan than a steady stream of interviews for the roles that make sense for your career.

Now, you and I both know how difficult it has become to land a single targeted and qualified interview in this market. It takes a lot of mental bandwidth and repetition to build an interview pipeline. But it doesn’t have to. Our team can do it for you.
