Three job search habits that keep senior tech leaders stuck

The following people have ZERO chance of surviving the tech job market. The third one is basically natural selection at work.

I've been watching how senior tech leaders are searching for jobs, and the pattern is surprisingly consistent. The people struggling the most aren't necessarily less experienced. They're just playing a game that no longer works.

1. Relying on referrals

The first group is relying on referrals.

Referrals are great, but they're a limited resource. Even the more well-connected engineering leaders I know only have a handful of people they can comfortably ask for help. With this approach, you're relying on the right job to open up at the right company, under the right hiring manager, at exactly the right time.

2. Rewriting the resume for every application

The second group is rewriting their resume for every application.

I understand why people do it. People think it improves their chances. But at the Senior Manager, Director, and VP level, companies aren't looking for someone who can be molded into ten different jobs. They're looking for someone known for solving one expensive problem exceptionally well. If your career story changes every time you click "Apply," it's hard to build that kind of credibility.

3. Passively looking

The third group is passively looking.

They update LinkedIn, submit a few applications every other week, respond when a recruiter reaches out, and hope something sticks. It’s like waiting for a bag of money to fall into your lap. Opportunities, on the other hand, go to candidates who are actively creating conversations with hiring managers, building visibility, and putting themselves in front of companies before everyone else does.

Specialists with a clear reputation win

The market has become far more competitive than it was a few years ago, and even more so for senior leadership roles. Companies are making fewer bets, which means they want specialists with a clear reputation, not generalists with a customized resume for every opening.

If your job search still depends on referrals, resume tweaking, and waiting for inbound opportunities, you're competing with thousands of people doing exactly the same thing.

Extraordinary results require extraordinary effort, which is exactly how we are able to land around 500 interviews for our clients every month. Check them out.
