The AI wave gets you the interview, but not the offer

Here's a pattern I'm watching play out in real time in the tech job market right now.

We have 3 Platform and Data leaders who between them pulled 5 offers from twenty interviews.

And we have seven candidates, all working on the AI solutioning side, who've collectively done close to twenty interviews each (150 total).

Zero offers.

In the room, but losing there

They're getting in the room. The AI wave absolutely gets you in the room.

But they're losing once they're there to people who actually know how to build the systems that make AI work.

And the time-to-offer tells the same story.

Our platform and data leaders are landing high-paying (7 fig or near 7 fig comp) roles in under 2 to 3 months right now.

The AI-wrapper candidates? 6 to 8 months of interviews before they landed an offer.

Building AI solutions is the easy part

Simply because building AI solutions is the easy part. Most generalists can do it. (From what I learned from speaking with top-tier tech leaders.)

Having the right data. Automated pipelines. A foundational platform that enables AI-driven intelligence at scale.

That's the hard part. That's what companies actually need. And that's what very few people can actually deliver.

Where demand is concentrating

This isn't a niche pattern.

From our own analysis of roles posted across the US market in the last month, tech companies are putting out around 40 percent of all tech jobs. And 64 percent of those roles are in data and software engineering.

The foundational systems. That's where demand is concentrating right now.

And it's moving much faster than the public narrative has caught up to.

In the next five years the tech professionals making the most money will not be the ones building AI solutions.

They'll be the ones building what AI runs on.
