Passively looking for a job? Here's what that really means

If I REALLY wanted to land a new job in 2026, here’s what I would NOT do: be casual about it.

A lot of customers say “I’m passively looking for better opportunities” before partnering with us. What this translates to in job-search terms in the current market is “I’m waiting for a bag of money to fall into my lap while I do nothing.”

One of these has to give

If you actually want to move to a new role, why are you not in the market and applying/networking?

If you really love your job and do not want to move, why are we talking in the first place?

One of these has to give. And usually, it is a case of people wanting better opportunities but being scared of the effort it takes to land a new role. As experts, this is what we hear when you say you’re “passively open” or “passively looking.”

This fear leads people to start being complacent with where they currently are. A stressful workplace becomes a “fast-paced environment”. Overwork becomes “hustle”. Not getting paid what you deserve becomes “a promised promotion next quarter.”

The pain of applying is smaller than you think

The problem is, people believe that the pain of sending out applications is greater than the pain that their current role is causing them. And they’re wrong.

With the correct roadmap and dedicated effort, people start seeing results faster than you would believe. The leaders who partner with us go from “passively looking” to “actively interviewing” within 12 days of working with us on average.

If you feel this post was a personal attack, book a call with us and we’ll show you the results you could be seeing within your first few weeks with us.
