Answering 'What's your biggest weakness?' as a senior leader

Answers you should shamelessly manipulate in your next interview:

Every interview is a performance. You're deciding what parts of your experience deserve the spotlight and what parts don't. That's exactly what companies do when they describe a role. They emphasize the exciting projects, the growth opportunities, and the culture. They don't open with the budget constraints, internal politics, or the manager who changes priorities every Tuesday.

Candidates should stop feeling guilty about presenting themselves strategically.

"What's your biggest weakness?"

Take the classic, "What's your biggest weakness?"

This question has eliminated more good candidates than it should. I've seen senior leaders talk themselves out of an interview by admitting to something that's fundamental to the role. A Product leader who says they struggle with prioritization. An Engineering Director who says they're uncomfortable making decisions with incomplete information. You might be telling the truth, but you've also answered the question they never had to ask: "Why shouldn't we hire you?"

Pick something real, but not something that makes them question whether you can do the job. More importantly, explain how you manage it today. That's the part they actually care about.

"You're already a VP. Why a Senior Director role?"

Then there's my favorite: “You're already a VP. Why are you interviewing for a Senior Director role?"

They're trying to figure out whether you'll leave the moment a bigger title appears. Telling them you "want a new challenge" doesn't answer that concern because everyone says it.

Talk about the work instead. Explain why the problem they're solving genuinely interests you. Explain why the scope, the team, or the opportunity to build something matters more than the title. A hiring manager is trying to understand your decision-making process, not your ability to parrot interview clichés.

Your leadership style

The same thing happens with leadership style.

I can't count how many times I've heard "I'm a servant leader" or "I lead by example." This tells the panel a whole bunch of nothing. They don't help anyone imagine what it's actually like to work with you.

Describe your operating system instead. How do you set expectations? How do you hold people accountable? What happens when someone misses a deadline? How do you coach high performers differently from struggling ones? Those details make your leadership feel real because they're based on repeatable behaviors, not buzzwords.

The best candidates don't invent a different person. They simply tell the version of the truth that makes the interviewer feel confident they're the right hire.

All of these answers take practice to get perfect, which is why it is important to have a reliable system of landing interviews. We do exactly that for you. Book a call with us to learn more.
